SIMON HART MP MEETS LEADING APPRENTICE
Simon Hart MP has met Chris Caine, 20, from Kilgetty to hear about being the only joiner selected to represent the UK at Europe’s most important and prestigious skills competition.
The EuroSkills Competition in September sees teams from across Europe compete in a wide range of skills.
Chris, who trained at Pembrokeshire College and works for DH Carpentry and Joinery in Pembroke Dock, has achieved a place in Team UK - 22 elite young apprentices and learners who will battle it out to win medals in disciplines ranging from engineering to construction and digital to hospitality.
Mr Hart said: “I was immensely impressed by Chris’ work at DH carpentry, he is a fantastic craftsman. When I was there they were working on some garage doors for a client in the South East so distance is no object for them.”
To secure a place in Team UK, Chris excelled in the National Finals of the WorldSkills UK Competitions, the finals of which are held at WorldSkills UK LIVE.
Chris said: “The selection process for Team UK was exhaustive but I am so passionate about cooking that I was determined to secure my place. I know the competition will be tough in Budapest but I’m determined to give it my all and make everyone back home proud of me.”
Governments and industry will be watching the Competition with interest as the event is used to benchmark skills in the UK with those in other European countries.
Dr Neil Bentley, Chief Executive, WorldSkills UK, the organisation responsible for selecting and training Team UK to the highest international standard said: “I offer my congratulations to Chris. This will be a life-enhancing opportunity for her and the other members of Team UK.”
